IEP Consultation

IEP Consultant for Schools

IEP consultation is for schools that may need:

  • IEP guidance

  • Speech-language consultation

  • Staff training

  • Goal writing or review support

What Is IEP Consultation?

IEP stands for Individualized Education Program—a legally binding document developed for students in the school system who qualify for special education services under the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).

An IEP consultation is when a professional (in this case, a speech therapist) helps families understand, prepare for, or review their child’s IEP to ensure it meets their unique communication and educational needs.

What a Speech Therapist Can Do in an IEP Consultation?

For Parents:
  • Explain the IEP process in plain language

  • Review IEP goals to ensure they're SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound)

  • Help parents advocate for appropriate speech-language services

  • Translate clinical reports or school evaluations

  • Recommend additional assessments or goals

  • Role-play IEP meetings to empower parents

For Schools:
  • Help write functionally appropriate speech-language goals

  • Advise on service minutes and delivery models (pull-out, push-in, consultative)

  • Provide data interpretation from speech-language evaluations

  • Attend or prep for IEP meetings as a consultant
